Marvin Sonsona Skips Training, Scheduled Fight Called Off

Former WBO super flyweight champion “Marvelous” Marvin Sonsona left his training camp to fly to his hometown of General Santos City to celebrate his 20th birthday and never returned, forcing promoters to call off a fight scheduled for him on September 4.

His manager, Dr. Rajan Yraola told the Inquirer he didn’t want Sonsona to skip training but he insisted and “what happened last time happened again and Marvin claimed he had a problem in GenSan.”

Yraola said “it’s a pity that he wastes the opportunities given him” by international matchmaker and promoter Sampson Lewkowicz and Filipino promoter Sammy Gello-ani. Yraola said he had advised Sonsona “you are not ready to go back to boxing so you might as well settle down in GenSan.”

The manager said Sonsona has another schedule in November on a big card of a Lewkowicz promotion in the Philippines but he is not sure whether the former world champion would comply.

Yraola said he had told  Sonsona that the September 4 fight against an Indonesian or Korean fighter for a WBO Asia Pacific super bantamweight title was more of  an “activity fight” and that Lewkowicz had promised him  that if Sonsona  put on a good performance in the regional championship fight he can have a chance for another world title fight.”

The manager lamented the fact that the talented southpaw was missing the opportunities given him adding “there’s nothing we can do and I don’t want a repeat of what happened in his last two fights” when he lost by a 4th round knockout in a battle for the vacant WBO 122 pound crown to Wilfredo Vazquez Jr in Puerto Rico on February 27 this year after losing his WBO super flyweight title on the scales and figuring in a controversial draw against Alejandro Hernandez in Ontario on November 21, 2009.

Yraola said “we were okay but after his birthday I don’t know what happened. I told him I didn’t want him to leave because his fight was just over a month away but unfortunately he left. Its difficult if he loses again on September 4 he will have no credibility.”
